Bouldering Up, trekking down
Here is a video of the area: https://youtu.be/NdqXAAoMl7Y
Jabal Qatar is a great training hike for bigger mountains. The initial climb and bouldering of this trek is similar to what you will experience on the Barranco Wall on Kilimanjaro’s Machame route. This non-technical climb is both exhilarating and challenging! The last hour before summiting hikers will navigate over steep scree that mimics the summit of most high altitude climbs not covered in snow. The more you train and experience before big expeditions, the more enjoyable and safer your trip will be. This trek is for fit people, not afraid of hikes, and ready for 5-6 hours of strenuous exercise.
Meet at the Wadi Sharm Hotel, Oman. 2 hours from Dubai, 2.5 hours from Abu Dhabi plus the time it takes to cross the Omani boarder.
After an early breakfast, we will drive 20 minutes to the Jabal Qatar trail head. The ascent is around 3 hours and the descent is another 2 hour, though the way down is tricky. There are two section of climbing and scrambling in the first hour and a half that will require quite a bit of effort. This is the portion that is similar to Barranco Wall. We’ll break for a snack after these climbs before the final ascent. If you attempt to push through, you will have the option to turn around earlier and make this a 4 hour hike, leaving off the more difficult sections.
At the end of the hike, we’ll head back to our hotel for a swim and evening BBQ. Since we’re staying at a hotel there is no need to fuss with camping gear, sleeping bags or the worrying lack of a toilet.
After breakfast we will stretch out our legs and enjoy the local area as we hike the Banana Plantations through nearby Wadi Sharm. This hike will be less difficult than the previous day and take around 3 hours. We will enjoy a packed lunch in the Wadi before heading back home.
Families are welcomed to join us. They can spend Friday enjoying the hotel swimming pool and Saturday trekking with us on the 3 hour Banana Plantation hike.

GETTING TO WADI SHARM HOTEL.
This hike is in what is locally know as no-mans land. It is in between the UAE and Oman boarder. Check this map and you will understand the 'enclave concept. This is why we must 'exit' UAE in one place, but not 'enter' for another 50km. We will need to get exit stamps and pay 35dh to UAE in Buraimi, and pay another 50dh to get a visa into Oman. Then we will promptly turn around without actually going into Oman 'proper'.
